NA Sponsorship: Finding a Sponsor

An NA sponsor is another member in recovery who offers personal support and shares experience with working the Twelve Steps. Sponsorship is a private relationship between members.

What does an NA sponsor do?

Sponsors listen, share their recovery experience and help members understand the NA program. A sponsor offers peer support, not professional counseling or medical advice.

How do I find a sponsor?

NA meetings are a place to meet members and hear how they work the program. The Sponsorship pamphlet suggests looking for someone you can learn to trust and asking them directly. Members choose their own sponsors.

If someone cannot sponsor you, you can ask another member. You can also change sponsors if the relationship is not meeting your needs.

Can I attend before I have a sponsor?

Yes. The requirement for NA membership is a desire to stop using drugs. What Is the NA Program? explains membership and the fellowship.
